In all the years I knew him, not once did he refuse to help me. A kind and reassuring presence in the office and out, and above all to me - non-judgemental. You could expose a mistake to him and know he would not be thinking badly of you. That’s a really rare quality, and he stood out amongst many of his low quality colleagues displaying low quality behaviour.
